The action on the Little Theatre stage moves from Williamsburg, Brooklyn (Time Stands Still) to River City, Iowa as The Music Man moves into the theatre for rehearsal this week. Let’s Put on a Show! is the title of an exhibit about the evolution of the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre that will be displayed at the History Center of San Luis Obispo County from February 4 through April 26, 2015. The exhibit will trace the development of the Little Theatre over the years with an emphasis on how it has evolved from a small, completely volunteer group of local citizens with a passion for theater into a professionally run, non-profit, performing arts organization that, in addition to fully staged plays, offers youth theater classes, staged readings, and other programming. The exhibit project was spearheaded by board member Michael Simkins and has been generously sponsored by Joan Gellert Sargen. Remembering Charlene... All of us here at the Little Theatre are still reeling from the news that our dear friend and dedicated volunteer Charlene Premer passed away last Sunday. The news was unexpected and devastating, however Charlene would rather we celebrate her life than mourn her passing, and that is exactly what we will do (and invite you to do) on February 17th at 11am at New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach. Per Charlene's request, this is a celebration of her life, so please do not wear black, and no flowers. I don't think she can stop us from shedding a few tears, but there will certainly be laughter as well. If you'd like to make a donation in Charlene's name, an account has been setup at Coast Hills Federal Credit Union for those who would like to honor her with a donation. The donations will help her family pay for cremation expenses and the balance will be donated in her honor to her favorite charities: Arthritis Foundation and Cancer Treatment Center.

FREE and reduced price tickets are available for ACT's production of THE SECRET GARDEN thanks to Central Coast Funds for Children

We recently received a generous $1,500 grant from the Central Coast Funds for Children in support of the Academy of Creative Theatre (ACT) production of The Secret Garden which runs January 16-25, 2015. Specifically, the grant underwrites discounted children’s tickets to ALL performances as well as a limited number of free tickets for children and families in collaboration with the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County (CAPSLO.) The tickets are being distributed through CAPSLO to families involved in Head Start and other programs for families and children.

ACT’s production of The Secret Garden is directed by Shelagh Garren and features 12 student actors from the Little Theatre’s ACT educational program. The classic children’s story, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, centers around Mary Lennox, a young orphan, who is sent to England to live with her invalid cousin and reclusive Uncle Archibald on his mysterious estate. When Mary discovers a hidden, locked garden, her life is changed forever. With the help of the warmhearted maid Martha; Dickon, the boy who understands the language of animals; the crusty gardener, Ben, and, of course, the robin who leads her to the garden, Mary brings both the neglected garden and her family back to life. A magical story of hope, renewal, and the transforming power of love, this heartwarming story is ideal for children and families.

The Secret Garden runs January 16-25, 2015 at the Little Theatre on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. The cast includes young actors from throughout the County: Jayda Monreal, Campbell Ellery, Sienna Ritter, Linnea Marks, Brooke Andris, Penny DellaPelle, Elizabeth Tharp, Trevyn Wong, Conner Allen, Zoe Peach-Riley, Raegan Lunceford and Riley Hutcheson.

“Participating in theatre encourages creativity and builds self-confidence” says ACT Coordinator Kerry DiMaggio. “ACT provides a creative, artistic, educational and FUN outlet for children who might not otherwise be engaged with their peers or other important adult role models. This generous grant from the Central Coast Funds for Children enables us to share this production of The Secret Garden, not only with the students performing in the production, but with children and families throughout the county who might not otherwise be able to attend.”

ABOUT THE ACADEMY OF CREATIVE THEATRE
If you haven't yet heard about the programs of the Little Theatre's Academy of Creative Theatre, it's time you did! ACT provides year-round theatrical training for youth ages 5-18 (kindergarten through 12th grade.) ACT’s after-school programs, summer camps and theatrical production classes inspire young performers and technicians to develop skills which will benefit them throughout their lives, both on and off the stage. Students involved in ACT learn from professional artists in programs designed to help students explore creative self-expression and individuality. Whether our students choose to pursue theatre as a career, as volunteers or as audience members, our hope is their experience at the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre will help them to develop a greater appreciation of the theatre arts and a stronger connection to their community.

SPRING THEATRE CLASSES
ACT is now accepting registrations for its Spring 2015 Theatre Classes.  All ACT classes take place in a lively, nurturing, fun environment and are taught by professional teaching artists who are passionate and skilled at working with young performers.  ACT classes stretch the imagination, encourage teamwork and collaboration, and help students develop listening and speaking skills, all while promoting creativity and self-esteem.

ACT is offering a variety of classes this spring for all age ranges and levels of experience beginning February 23 and running through April 29. A Spring Break camp will also be available April 6-10. Thanks to a generous grant through The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County, generous scholarships are available so that every child with a desire to learn can participate.

Thanks to two generous grants from The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County, we are looking pretty spiffy these days, both onstage and off, here at the Little Theatre. In October, we received a very generous grant of $5,000 to fund the purchase of a new state-of-the-art computerized lighting console replacing our 23 year old “antique” light board. The new system is able to be programmed with multiple lighting designs for multiple shows and will greatly enhance the experience of both audiences and technicians alike during our ambitious 2014-15 Season.

In addition to our gorgeous new light board, we also have new printers! Almost a year ago now, we received a grant of $2,850 through the Foundation to purchase a new thermal ticket printer and a new color printer/scanner. It took awhile to find the perfect ticket printer AND to program it to work with our ticketing system, but now, you can actually read the seat numbers on your tickets and our publicity materials really stand out in full color!  Many thanks to our Community Foundation for their generous support!

Every time we turn around lately, it seems like it's time for more auditions. I love it! Our next Ubu's Other Shoe staged reading to hit the rehearsal room will be MISS WITHERSPOON by Christopher Durang. Director Kelly Fidopiastis needs five or six talented actors and actresses to bring this deliciously offbeat comedy to life. Auditions are this Sunday at 4 pm and Monday at 6 pm. If musicals are more to your talents and taste, be sure to dust off your tap shoes and come on down on November 23 and 24 for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN auditions. This is going to be our biggest musical of the year, so warm up those vocal chords and stretch those dancing muscles. When the trick or treating (in the rain or under moonlight!) is done, the party is definitely NOT over! If you like LIVE, ORIGINAL, FREE late-night theatre, come on down for a one-of-a-kind Halloween party at NO SHAME THEATRE. Because when NO SHAME and HALLOWEEN collide, you never know what might happen. The doors open at 9:30 pm, we'll accept your original five minute scripts at 10 pm and the show starts at 10:30 pm.

Saw a rehearsal for THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM VALLEY SPELLING BEE last night and we are in for a real treat! This Tony Award winning musical comedy opens next Friday, November 7th. A rare DARK weekend at the Little Theatre but PICASSO is on its way!

So, Picasso and Einstein walk into a bar...

Do you like to laugh? Then you're going to LOVE our next show, opening next week here at the Little Theatre! Steve Martin's PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE goes into tech rehearsals this weekend, adding lights and sound and more to the mix that will become another great show here at the Little Theatre.

In this long-running Off Broadway hit, Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso meet in a Parisian café in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated artist set the world afire with cubism. Director Suzy Newman has assembled an amazing cast for this absurdist comedy by actor, author and comedian Steve Martin. Scenic artist Lisa Langere has been working every day this week on her "forgery" of Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon  and it is going to blow you away when it's finished. The mural is just one element of the wonderful set design by David Linfield for the show, and the set design is just one element of this show that is absolutely going to raise the bar on everything else we do here.

PINOCCHIO's adventures, AUDITIONS galore and RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN!

PINOCCHIO is everywhere today! First of all, there's a lovely photo and a BIG thanks to Central Coast Funds for Children in the GOOD NEWS section of the Tribune today. There's an awesome video featuring two of our young actors, and the lovely Kerry DiMaggio, on the KSBY WEBSITE (and it will air on the 6 pm news tonight too!) Seriously, I know Kevin told you all about this a couple of days ago, but it bears repeating again and again...and again. Come on out and audition for a show! Finally, just a quick note from the girl who works upstairs at the theatre. Remember her? It's me. There are definitely a few perks to be had when you work late at the Little Theatre. Sometimes you get to overhear the rehearsals for the next show. And if you're really lucky, the next show is a musical. And if you're really, REALLY lucky, the musical features some of the most beautiful songs ever written by two of Broadway's most prolific and legendary teams:  RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN!

Well lately... It's a Grand Night for Singing as I sit In My Own Little Corner in My Own Little Room. I may be As Corny as Kansas in August, but sometimes I feel Younger than Springtime as I spend Some Enchanted Evenings in my little office upstairs. Musicals are definitely one of My Favorite Things. 

You may not be able to sit upstairs and listen to rehearsal, but you can get your tickets early for SOME ENCHANTED EVENING: THE SONGS OF RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN. Trust me, you'll love it. Opens on  Valentine's Day, February 14th. Not a bad idea for a date with your sweetheart.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Many thanks to director Lisa Woske and the wonderful cast and crew of Miracle on 34th Street for an amazing, record-breaking run! Thank you for making the holidays a little brighter for all the folks who flocked to see your show.

The Little Theatre will be "dark" until January 2nd. The box office will be closed but you can still buy tickets for Pinocchio, Other Desert Cities, Some Enchanted Evening and even $25 Gift Certificates ONLINE.  The box office will be re-open at 11 am on January 2nd.

On Friday, December 27th, FREE NO SHAME THEATRE will be the one exception to our two weeks off here at the Little Theatre. The lobby will open at 9:30 pm, original script submissions will be accepted at 10 pm and exciting, original NO SHAME theatre will take the stage at 10:30 pm. So, get off that couch, write a story or a song or a poem or whatever strikes your fancy and we'll see you here!

'Tis the Season for Giving, for Celebrating and for Enjoying some Great Holiday Shows!

GIVE THE GIFT OF LIVE THEATRE

In Miracle on 34th Street, a very practical little girl named Susan (as well as the entire city of New York!) learns how to "believe even when common sense tells you not to." Common Sense. Some might say that anyone who chooses to work in the unpredictable world of live theatre, does NOT have that trait in abundance. But one thing we do have is the ability to believe, especially when common sense tells us not to!

This year at the Little Theatre, we have two fabulous holiday shows running eight shows per week, an additional Ubu's Other Shoe staged reading with two performances next week and our Academy of Creative Theatre students grab the theatre whenever it's not already booked to rehearse Pinocchio (opening January 10th!) This is a very busy place in December and sometimes I wonder how we ever get it all done! We have a very small staff and a very tight budget but with the help of 300 miraculous volunteers, somehow we're able to produce 10 great shows, reaching over 14,000 people on 44 out of 52 weekends every year--and we've been doing it for over 67 years! How, you may ask? It's a mystery.

Actually, the answer lies in the fact that we LOVE it. We believe in live theatre and, with your help, it's always possible. Many thanks to the over 250 individuals and businesses who have already made a donation to the Little Theatre this season. Thank you for playing your part in bringing the magic of live theatre to San Luis Obispo! In particular, we'd like to thank the many people who have made a special end of year donation. SANTALAND is coming to town and MIRACLE is selling out - Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The Little Theatre will be "dark" on both Thursday and Friday nights as we share the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. We'll be back on Saturday afternoon with two performances of MIRACLE ON 34th STREET at 2 pm and 7 pm and then opening night of THE SANTALAND DIARIES at approximately 9:15 pm, immediately following Miracle. And then of course, we'll have another matinee and another evening performance of Miracle on Sunday, so you've got plenty of opportunities to join us -- and we really hope you will.

Okay, so the Little Theatre is dark this weekend, but there are a LOT of other shows out there that you can go see! From PCPA in Santa Maria, to The Spot in Arroyo Grande, to the Melodrama in Oceano and the Cambria Center for the Arts. Support great theatre in SLO County and go out and see a show!
